Start with common factors
List factors or compare prime factorizations. The greatest number that divides both values is four.
Factoring reverses multiplication: first remove the greatest common factor, then look for a common binomial created by grouping.

These examples follow the numerical, monomial, GCF, and grouping work developed on the board.
List factors or compare prime factorizations. The greatest number that divides both values is four.
The numerical GCF is eighteen; the smallest shared powers are and .
Check the result by distributing back across the parentheses.
The GCF itself is positive. Later, when grouping, a negative factor can make two binomial factors match: .
After factoring each pair, is the shared factor.
Continue until no factor can be broken down further using the lesson’s methods.
Choose groups that expose the same binomial factor, then check by multiplying.
05 · Avoid
Factoring asks for a product, so write the GCF outside parentheses and the quotients inside.
The GCF uses the smallest exponent shared by every term.
Divide each complete term, including its sign, by the chosen factor.
Always look for a common factor across all terms first.
Factor a negative from one group when needed so the binomial factors match exactly.
Multiply the factors back together to confirm the original expression.

A factor is one piece of a product. To factor is to rewrite an expression as a product.
That is the greatest power guaranteed to divide every term. See .
First factor any GCF shared by all terms. Then split the remaining four terms into two pairs.
Multiply the factors. The expanded result must equal the original expression, as illustrated by .
