01Monomial
3,x,4x2,5=51/23,\quad x,\quad 4x^2,\quad \sqrt5=5^{1/2}A number, a variable, or a product of numbers and variables whose variable exponents are whole numbers.
02Not a monomial
x−1=1x,x=x1/2,2xx^{-1}=\frac1x,\qquad \sqrt{x}=x^{1/2},\qquad 2^xNegative, fractional, or variable exponents fall outside the monomial definition.
03Term and coefficient
5x4−7x2+8⟹3 terms5x^4-7x^2+8\quad\Longrightarrow\quad 3\text{ terms}Addition and subtraction separate terms; the numerical factor of a term is its coefficient.
04Degree
7x2y4⟹deg⁡=2+4=67x^2y^4\quad\Longrightarrow\quad \deg=2+4=6For one term, add the variable exponents. For a polynomial, use the greatest term degree.
05Leading term
x3+5x2+6x+7⟹leading term x3, leading coefficient 1x^3+5x^2+6x+7\quad\Longrightarrow\quad \text{leading term }x^3,\ \text{leading coefficient }1Write in descending powers; the first term is the leading term and its coefficient is the leading coefficient.

Worked examples

The examples follow the definitions, classifications, and operations used in the recorded board work.

Classify

Use degree and number of terms

5x2+4x−2⟹quadratic trinomial5x^2+4x-2\quad\Longrightarrow\quad \text{quadratic trinomial}

The largest exponent is two and there are three terms, so this is a quadratic trinomial.

7x3−5x10⟹tenth-degree binomial7x^3-5x^{10}\quad\Longrightarrow\quad \text{tenth-degree binomial}

The term with exponent ten determines the degree even though it is written second.

Add

Combine only like terms

(x2+3x−5)+(4x2−8x+6)=5x2−5x+1(x^2+3x-5)+(4x^2-8x+6)=5x^2-5x+1

Line up equal powers of xx and add the coefficients of matching terms.

Subtract

Distribute the negative first

(x3−4x2+x)−(5x2+6x+7)=x3−9x2−5x−7(x^3-4x^2+x)-(5x^2+6x+7)=x^3-9x^2-5x-7

Every term in the second polynomial changes sign before like terms combine.

Distribute

Multiply a monomial by every term

3x2(x2−4x+5)=3x4−12x3+15x23x^2(x^2-4x+5)=3x^4-12x^3+15x^2

Multiply coefficients and add exponents on matching bases.

Multiply

Every term meets every term

(2x+3)(x−5)=2x2−7x−15(2x+3)(x-5)=2x^2-7x-15

(4x2−3x)(2x2+5x)=8x4+14x3−15x2(4x^2-3x)(2x^2+5x)=8x^4+14x^3-15x^2

Distribute systematically, then combine the like terms in the middle.

Extend

A larger polynomial product

(x2+3x−4)(x2−2x−5)=x4+x3−15x2−7x+20(x^2+3x-4)(x^2-2x-5)=x^4+x^3-15x^2-7x+20

Organize the partial products by degree so no term is missed.

05 · Avoid

Common mistakes

Calling every expression a polynomial.

Check variable exponents first: they must be whole numbers.

Counting terms incorrectly.

Terms are separated by addition or subtraction, not by multiplication inside a term.

Using the first written exponent as the degree.

The degree comes from the greatest term degree, even when terms are out of order.

Combining unlike terms.

Terms combine only when their variable parts and exponents match.

Forgetting subtraction changes every sign.

Distribute the negative across the entire second polynomial.

Missing a product.

When multiplying polynomials, each term in one factor multiplies every term in the other.

06 · Check yourself

Quick check

Try each prompt before opening the worked answer.

1Why is the square root of x not a monomial?

x−1=1x,x=x1/2,2xx^{-1}=\frac1x,\qquad \sqrt{x}=x^{1/2},\qquad 2^x shows that the square root is x1/2x^{1/2}, which has a fractional exponent.

2How do you name a polynomial with degree two and three terms?

Quadratic trinomial, as in 5x2+4x−2⟹quadratic trinomial5x^2+4x-2\quad\Longrightarrow\quad \text{quadratic trinomial}.

3What must happen before subtracting two polynomials?

Distribute the negative to every term in the second polynomial, then combine like terms: (x3−4x2+x)−(5x2+6x+7)=x3−9x2−5x−7(x^3-4x^2+x)-(5x^2+6x+7)=x^3-9x^2-5x-7.

4What is the key check after multiplying polynomials?

Combine all like terms and write the result in descending degree, as in (x2+3x−4)(x2−2x−5)=x4+x3−15x2−7x+20(x^2+3x-4)(x^2-2x-5)=x^4+x^3-15x^2-7x+20.
